← THE JOURNAL

Bring a brief, not just a reference.

How to make your next barber or stylist conversation more useful.

Describe your actual mornings.

Tell your stylist how much time you spend on your hair, how often you wash it and whether you use a dryer or styling product. A cut should work with that routine.

Explain what you like about the reference.

Is it the texture, the amount of volume, the fringe or the shape at the sides? Point to the specific detail. The person in the picture may have different hair, so ask what can translate to yours.

Ask about the next six weeks.

Before deciding, ask how the shape will grow out and how often it needs maintenance. If you want a bigger change, consider a gradual version first. Your barber or stylist can assess your hair in person.

General styling and photography information. Individual needs vary; professional fit and clinical questions require an appropriate qualified adviser.
